Sun Take Williams With 4th Pick In WNBA Draft
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (April 16, 2015) – With the fourth overall pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm, the Connecticut Sun chose 6-foot-3 Duke center/forward Elizabeth Williams Thursday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.
A four-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year and the WBCA Defensive Player of the Year in 2014-15, Williams averaged 14.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game during her career. As a senior she averaged 14.5 points and nine rebounds per game.
“Elizabeth is someone we have been coveting for a long time,” Connecticut Sun coach Anne Donovan said. “Her skill-set in the post coupled with her size, presence and intelligence will make a significant impact on our post game. Given our needs, the draft could not have worked better for us than it did tonight.”
Williams was the only ACC player to finish her career with at least 1,900 points, 1,000 rebounds and 400 blocks. Her block total of 426 was second all-time in ACC history in blocks.
“I’m super excited to be here,” Williams said. “I’m excited to be able to play for this organization. It’s a blessing to be here. I think my athleticism will transition really well, (along with) my strength in the post.”
In the second round, the Connecticut Sun worked out a trade with the Atlanta Dream, acquiring veteran guard Jasmine Thomas in exchange for Brittany Hrynko of DePaul. The Sun picked Hrynko with the 19th overall pick. Thomas has averaged seven points and 2.3 assists in four WNBA seasons.
“Acquiring Jasmine Thomas adds experience to a young backcourt,” Donovan explained. “We think Brittany is going to be a fine player, but we are already a very young team, and felt adding a veteran would help us continue building a winning roster.”
Connecticut opens the 2015 regular season at Mohegan Sun Arena on June 5th against Washington at 7 p.m. Sun season ticket plans for 2015 are currently on sale and can be reserved by calling a Sun Ticket Sales Representative at 1.877.SUN.TIXX.
