Connecticut Sun teammates Renee Montgomery and Allison Hightower were on opposite sides during the opening game of a first-round playoff series between Vologda Chevakata of Russia and Maccabi Ashdod of Israel in the 2015 FIBA EuroCup Tournament Thursday night.

Montgomery finished with a double-double, collecting 17 points and 11 assists to go along with six rebounds and three steals for 11th-seeded Chevakata.

But Hightower (13 points, four rebounds) ended up on the winning side as host Maccabi Ashdod held on for a 71-67 victory. The teams meet again next Thursday in Game 2. The winner of this series meets the winner of the matchup between No. 3 UE Sopron and 14th-seeded Udominate Basket.

On Monday night in Israel, Chelsea Gray provided another exciting glimpse of what Connecticut Sun fans can expect next season, collecting 26 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals for visiting Hapoel Rishon Le-Zion in an 89-82 loss to Ramat Hasharon.

In her team’s previous game on January 5th, Gray had 27 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in a win over Elitzur Holon. She is averaging 22.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.3 steals in four games with H.R. Le-Zion (6-7).

Selected in March with the 11th overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft, the former Duke star missed the 2014 season recovering from a knee injury suffered in January of 2014.

Also in Israel, Danielle McCray had 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists as Elitzur Ramla rolled to a 68-46 win over ASA Jerusalem. McCray is averaging 18.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists for second-place Elitzur Ramla (10-3).

In another Israeli League game, Ebony Hoffman had 17 points and eight rebounds as BNOT Hertzeliya (9-4) beat Elitzur Holon, 93-83, on Monday. She is averaging 13.9 points, 11.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

In Australia, Bendigo’s Kelsey Griffin had 23 points and seven rebounds in an 89-82 loss to Dandenong (10-7). The two-time defending champs are in second place with an 11-5 record.

In South Korea, Alyssa Thomas had 15 points and seven rebounds for Hanabank in a 78-68 loss to Bichumi. She is averaging 19.2 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists this season.

On Wednesday night, Kelsey Bone’s Galatasaray team were upset 59-50 by Good Angels Kosice in a Eurobasket matchup.

And last Saturday in France, Alex Bentley had 21 points, three assists and three rebounds as Tarbes (9-5) rolled to an 88-64 win over Nantes (4-10). Bentley is averaging 16.6 points, 2.5 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game.
