Rookie Forward Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton took time out to read with local 3rd to 5th grade students at the Mar Vista Community Center as part of the Pitney Bowes “Reading Time Out” program. Wisdom-Hylton read The Real Slam Dunk and the children paid close attention. Each student received a goodie bag and four lucky students won Sparks prizes for correctly answering questions about the book.

6/14/09: Girl Scouts Inaugural Gold Award Ceremony
|
Los Angeles Sparks owners, Carla Christofferson and Kathy Goodman, were keynote speakers for the Girls Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Inaugural Gold Award Ceremony. The event was held to honor local Girl Scouts who made a difference in their community by dedicating more than 65 hours toward creating and implementing individual community service projects.

Lisa Leslie made a return to her alma mater, Morningside High School, along with members of the Los Angeles Sparks as they teamed up with the “Right to Play” foundation. The event focused on helping local youth by using sport and play programs as a way to improve their health and develop life skills.

The Los Angeles Sparks teamed up with March for Dimes and took part in the foundation’s annual 5k “March for Babies” at Exposition Park. The Sparks raised over $7,000 for organization which focuses on the education and research of healthy babies. Candace Parker and Coach Michael Cooper were on hand to walk with the team.

The entire Sparks team turned out at the Crenshaw Christian Community Center on August 20th to host its 5th annual clinic. 120 Participants started the day by receiving notebooks filled with information and attending workshops geared towards academics and fitness. After a break for lunch, the entire Sparks team and coaching staff showed up to interact with kids and aid them at various basketball skills stations and contests. Kids left with pictures, autographs and smiles!

As a “thank you” to over 1,000 2005 Sparks season tickets holders the Sparks organization held an event on August 18th at the Staples Center to give the fans more insight into what the Sparks are all about. Fans got to tour the locker room, receive autographs from the entire team, take pictures with the championship trophies and enjoy a complimentary dinner and gifts.

To promote literacy, DisneyHand, Radio Disney, and the Los Angeles Sparks took part in a WNBA Read To Achieve “reading timeout.” The event also included a special visit from Minnie Mouse. Los Angles Sparks players Tamecka Dixon and Nikki Teasley read fun Disney stories to children and signed autographs for everyone in attendance. Nikki read The Lion King to the first group and then had the kids take turns reading aloud to her in the reading chair.

Nikki Teasley spoke to both the Watts/Willowbrook and Harbor City Boys & Girls Clubs clubs on the importance of staying in school and hanging out with the “right crowd.” During the Watts Club visit, that had about 300 kids in attendance, she also taught a short ball handling clinic. She finished her visit by signing autographs and taking pictures with the kids.

Tamecka Dixon visited Weemes Elementary School and Ms. Matsui’s third grade classroom this Thursday June 23, 2005 from 12:30-1:30pm. After reading the students a story written by legendary author Dr. Seuss, she answered all of their questions and signed autographs. Each student received two books, courtesy of Disney, and a Sparks goodie bag. This was the team’s third Read To Achieve event of the 2005 season.

Christi Thomas visited Pasadena on July 13th to speak with and answer questions to campers in attendance of the Henry Bibby Basketball Skills Camp. Christi relayed positive life messages while including her own personal stories of how to be a successful basketball player and student. Campers were enthusiastic to ask questions and received autographs following the meet and greet.

Lisa Leslie and Mwadi Mabika made a special guest appearance at Coach Bibby’s Redondo Beach Summer Basketball Camp from 1:30-2:30pm on Thursday June 30, 2005. Lisa spoke to the campers about her experiences playing in high school, college, professionally, and at the Olympics. Afterwards, each child got an opportunity to meet both athletes and get their autograph.

The AVON Walk Expo was a great event for the Sparks to be a part of. While promoting the Sparks “Ladies Night Out Event” to be held August 13th, 2005 at the game against the Indiana Fever, Sparks staff also passed out fliers, gifts, bumper stickers, pocket schedules, tickets to games and booster club information to receptive participants. Raising awareness about breast cancer has been one of the primary causes of the Los Angeles Sparks this season.

Christi Thomas attended the highly regarded Gold Awards Ceremony at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday June 5, 2005. She presented each deserving Girl Scout their award and shared a few words of wisdom of her own.

The Sparks celebrated the first “WNBA Kids Health & Fitness Day” by hosting a private viewing of practice for the El Segundo High School Girls Varsity Basketball team, followed up with a fitness discussion from WNBA All-Star guard Nikki Teasley.

The Los Angeles Sparks visited Norwalk Regional Library on Wednesday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. to promote the importance of reading and education to local 3rd and 4th grade students. Tamika Whitmore and Dee Dee Wheeler read a book to separate groups of students and then combined the two to answer questions and sign autographs. All of the kids received a Sparks goodie bag that included a ticket voucher to the home-opener, a book of their choice, a Read To Achieve bookmark and several other Sparks goodies.

The Los Angeles Sparks hosted a pep rally to kick off the 2005 season on Saturday May 14, 2005 at Universal CityWalk from 2:00 - 4:00pm. The SparKIDS, the Sparks official dance team, kicked off the event with their very first performance of the season. The entire team and coaching staff were on hand to pump up the crowd for the upcoming season and sign autographs. The Sparks sport court was also available for a continuous shooting contest where each contestant took home a Sparks crazy wig!

The WNBA has hit the road with its traveling mobile fitness tour. Part of the League's National initiative, "Be Smart - Be Fit - Be Yourself," the "WNBA Be Fit Tour presented by McDonald's," will travel to all 13 WNBA markets, promoting the importance of health, fitness and self-confidence to teen girls and women through fun, interactive activities and positive messaging. The SparKIDS had two performances during this event, The Pasadena Summerfest held at the Rose Bowl, and team representatives were on hand to supply Sparks information and conduct a raffle for an autographed Lisa Leslie jersey!

Christi teamed up with CBS Channel 2 Sports Director Jim Hill to speak with two groups of sixth grade students about staying in school and establishing positive goals. Each session went for about thirty minutes and included a Q&A session from the students. There were 180 “push-pull” vouchers given out to the students and teachers for our home opener against San Antonio along with pocket schedules for this season. At the end of the presentation two Sparks t-shirts were raffled out to one student in each group.
