NEW YORK (April 21, 2015) —After the New York Liberty selected G Brittany Boyd and C Kiah Stokes in the first round of the 2015 WNBA Draft last week, the players joined Coach Bill Laimbeer and SVP, Business & Basketball Operations Kristin Bernert on a Monday conference call.
Here are some highlights:
On the roster:
“There are a lot of players that want to prove some things on and off the court and have great pride in how they do their job. We want to give everyone the opportunity this year to show who they are because we believe this is the beginning of building a great franchise.”
—Head Coach Bill Laimbeer
“If you can acquire players that already get it, and have already played at a very high level, that puts you one step ahead."
—Kristin Bernert, Senior Vice President, Business & Basketball Operations
“We assembled a great veteran group that will play a huge role in getting these young players better. I’m not one to play favorites, if you can hoop you play!"
On the rookies:
“We added three players that come from three really fun programs in Cal, UCONN and Stanford. We’re confident that they know the game of basketball really well. When a player has played for the caliber of coaches that these players have played for, you can have confidence that they’re going to come in understanding the game.”
On being drafted:
"When I heard my name, it was kind of unreal at the moment. To go a great place like New York it makes it even more special. I’m just looking forward to the opportunity and to get started; I know training camp is a month away, but I wish it was next week – I’m that excited."
On Kiah's game:
“Kiah wants to get better offensively, she’s a fine role player but we’re going to demand more of her. Geno said there’s room for a tremendous amount of improvement and we believe the same.”
"Obviously, I’m a defensive threat, so I want to make sure I bring that every day. And just keep working on my offensive game and do that when I need to. I’m excited and looking forward to it, but I have a lot of work to do still. I’m excited to just keep playing basketball."
On the gameplan:
"My approach for the season is just 'come in and learn' - get all the information that I can, soak it up and produce. Whatever Bill needs me to do, (whatever) he and his coaching staff need me to do, that’s what I’m willing to do. The things that I’m going to bring are the things that I can control: my energy, what I do on my off time: getting better, extra shooting, extra coniditioning, learning and dissecting the game, picking people’s brains."
On playing at The Garden in college:
“It was an honor, and to think that’s going to be my new home is incredible.”
“It was a fun experience. To be able to play where so many great players have played was a blessing and I was very grateful that my teammates and I had the opportunity .”
